The Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) is now offering a Carrier Ethernet Professional Certification program for telecommunications professionals. The program certifies expertise in Carrier Ethernet technologies, standards, services and applications.
MEF said distinguished leaders and experts in the carrier Ethernet industry would award professional certification to individuals who successfully pass the tests they develop. MEF is in the process of authorizing training providers to offer carrier Ethernet training courses.
The MEF Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional will pass a comprehensive written exam covering carrier Ethernet technology and service fundamentals from an applications perspective. MEF said it was suited for product and technical marketing managers, pre-sales and application engineers, product planners, and technically oriented sales professionals.
MEF Certified Professionals will be awarded an official MEF certificate and will be listed in the online directory of MEF Certified Professionals posted on the MEF and EthernetAcademy.net websites.
“With carrier Ethernet services being the fastest-growing data services segment, there is an increasing demand by service providers, equipment manufacturers and large enterprises for professionals with a solid baseline understanding of carrier Ethernet services,” said MEF President Nan Chen. “The program recognizes professionals with an industry-backed certification of their skills and capabilities.”
Successful CECP candidates will be required to demonstrate competence in the following areas:
- MEF carrier Ethernet services definitions for E-Line, E-LAN and E-Tree
- Advantages of different carrier Ethernet access technologies
- Definitions and application of UNI, EVC and ENNI in carrier Ethernet networks
- Key UNI, ENNI, EVC and OVC service attributes
- Definitions of MEF 9, 14, 18 vendor equipment and product certifications
- Key service requirements for target carrier Ethernet service applications (wholesale access, Ethernet access to IP, mobile backhaul, retail Ethernet services)
- Comparing and positioning carrier Ethernet services to layer 2 Frame Relay, IP/MPLS and TDM private line
- Understanding of circuit emulation over Ethernet
- Role of service, operations administration and maintenance (SOAM) in carrier Ethernet networks.
