In an effort to keep pace with rivals Audi and BMW, Mercedes-Benz will attempt to double the amount of cars it produces in India to 20,000 a year.

Mercedes-Benz hopes that by increasing the number of vehicles it assembles and by producing more parts in India, it will improve its profits and sales in the country. Despite being the first German luxury car maker to enter India, Mercedes trails its rivals in sales, with Audi leading the trio. By increasing the amount of vehicles it creates in the world’s sixth-largest car market, Mercedes should be able to save money on import duties and lower its prices for customers. The company has already begun assembly of its GLA SUV and will start manufacturing its CLA sedan within the next few months.
