Mobile business messaging app Talko has been aquired by Microsoft and folded into Skype, Talko announced on Dec. 21.
The purchase will give Talk a chance to create “great impact” on a wider scale than would have otherwise been possible through continuing their path toward “a (passionate) niche,” the Talko team said in a press release. Talko employees will also be brought into Skype.
“The broad-based success of communications apps tends to be binary: A small number of apps earn and achieve great viral growth, while most fall into some stable niche,” the press release continued
“I welcome the new team members and am excited about how Talko will fuel more innovation at Microsoft, whether it is enhancing the way family members stay in touch with Skype or building on the new Skype for Business services within Office 365,” said Gudeep Singh Pall, corporate VP of Skype.
Talko’s technology will be used in Skype and Skype for Business. The changeover is expected to be completed in March 2016. “We’ll strive to deliver the best of our product’s innovations far more broadly than on our current path,” Talko’s press release read.
Talko users will be provided a way to export their past conversations, voice messages, text, and photos before the service sunsets in March.
