Midcontinent Communications has extended its DTN platform for its latest backbone network expansion, connecting the systems in Minnesota that Midcontinent picked up with its acquisition of US Cable.

The MSO is using Infinera’s DTN Digital ROADM networking system. Midcontinent first deployed Infinera’s DTN technology last year.

The network extension covers a total of about 1,000 miles. Midcontinent’s network now spans more than 6,000 fiber miles.

“Infinera’s solution helps us scale our network efficiently,” said Jon Pederson, Midcontinent’s vice president of technology. “Choosing Infinera’s DTN solution has allowed us to add capacity in days rather than months, reducing capital and operating expenses across our entire network.”

Midcontinent also deployed Infinera’s ATN metro edge platform to extend commercial services to new customers. Infinera’s ATN supports Ethernet, SONET/SDH, OTN, video and multi-service aggregation onto 10 Gbps wavelengths with fully automated optical power management.
