AT&T announced it is now offering a 1 gigabit service to residents and small businesses around the Milwaukee area, including in parts of the city itself, as well as Wauwatosa, Waukesha, and surrounding communities. The company reports it has plans for nearby West Allis soon. Internet-only pricing for AT&T Internet 1000, which is the fastest speed tier, starts at $80 a month with a yearlong contract.
This rollout marks one of the 47 metros nationwide where AT&T says it has deployed ultra-fast internet service. The company’s goal is reportedly to reach at least 67 metros. “We market our ultra-fast service to nearly 4 million locations nationwide, of which over 650,000 include apartments and condo units,” AT&T says in a statement. “We plan to reach at least 12.5 million locations by mid-2019.”
AT&T also reports that the ultra-fast internet speeds will launch in February in Columbia, S.C., Jackson, Miss., Knoxville, Tenn., and Shreveport, La., to bring its number up to 51.
As is often the case with 1 Gbps rollouts, the Wisconsin news garnered some kudos from a local business association.
“The 100 percent fiber network from AT&T will contribute to our growing economy and quality of life in Milwaukee,” Tim Sheehy, president of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, says. “Access to high-speed internet will help create new jobs, grow small businesses and improve access to educational opportunities.”
