Mobile Future Chairman Jonathan Spalter yesterday sent an open letter to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) asking them to quickly free more spectrum, starting with repurposing the 1755-1780 MHz band for commercial mobile services without delay.
Mobile Future is a coalition of American technology and communications companies, consumers, and non-profit organizations that evangelize for continued innovation in the wireless sector.
Mobile Future would like to see immediate reallocation of the bands. The group argues that such a move is crucial to providing interim relief while other government bands, as well as voluntary incentive auctions of broadcast spectrum, are considered.
“Nowhere is the opportunity so vast, the need so urgent, and the policy so vital for achieving early and demonstrable results from the president’s spectrum initiative,” Spalter writes in the letter.
Mobile Future cites Brattle Group research that shows if 1755-1780 MHz spectrum is paired with the AWS-3 band, an auction could raise $12 billion in revenue.
