Moloney exits Motorola; Fawaz takes helm at Home division

June 28, 2012 By Mike Robuck

Dan MoloneyMotorola Mobility President Dan Moloney is leaving the company near the middle of next month, and former Charter Communications CTO Marwan Fawaz is now on board as executive vice president of the company’s Home division.

“Dan has led the company through one of the most exciting periods in its 84-year history – and in the last two years, revived Motorola’s innovation and drove the company’s evolution into a software and network technology leader in the home ecosystem,” Motorola said in a statement. “We thank Dan for all of his contributions to Motorola and to the industry at large.”

Fawaz was on hand at Motorola’s headquarters today meeting employees. A spokeswoman for Motorola said Fawaz will commute from his Denver-area home.

“As an industry veteran, chief technologist and top industry strategist, Marwan Fawaz understands the new dynamics of our rapidly changing marketplace,” said Liberty Global CTO Balan Nair. “We look forward to working with Marwan and the Motorola Home organization to continue leveraging what will be the biggest convergence opportunity in recent history.”

Marwan FawazMoloney, who will work with Fawaz until he departs, is leaving Motorola Mobility to pursue other opportunities. Chief technology officer Geoff Roman is also leaving the company at the end of this month. Google’s $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility was finalized last month, but Moloney and Roman left the company on their own accord, according to a spokeswoman.

Joining Motorola Mobility is Matt Bell, who worked with Fawaz at both Charter and Adelphia Communications. Bell is now Motorola Mobility’s senior vice president of strategy and technology. He was also part of Sarepta Advisors, which Fawaz formed last month.

Prior to be being CTO at Adelphia and Charter, Fawaz began his career as a design engineer at Times Mirror Cable Television and later joined Continental Cablevision as a vice president of engineering for the Western Region. He also worked at MediaOne as a vice president of operations and engineering; served as an executive-in-residence at Pilot House Ventures; managed the Northwest Region for Charter Communications as regional vice president; and worked for Vulcan Inc., a Paul Allen company, as a technology investment analyst.

Fawaz, who resigned from Charter in March of last year, received the National Cable & Telecommunications Association’s Vanguard Award in 2010.

“Dan Moloney has been a terrific partner, and while it’s disappointing to see him go, it’s great to have someone the caliber of Marwan Fawaz join Motorola Home. Marwan brings extensive industry knowledge and an innovative and collaborative approach that will greatly benefit Motorola Home, its customers and partners,” said Comcast Cable executive vice president and CTO Tony Werner.

Bell has held various management positions in the networking and broadband industry, including AT&T Broadband, BellSouth Entertainment and MediaOne. He was vice president of IP engineering and development at Charter Communications. At Charter, Bell led the OSS, IP voice and data engineering, advanced network support, and project management organizations.
