Signaling that fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) will play a key role in its broadband future, Motorola Inc. has inked a deal to acquire closely-held Quantum Bridge Communications.
Motorola said it intends to buy the Andover, Mass.-based company in an all-cash transaction, but did not disclose a specific sum.
The deal would consummate a marriage between two companies that first got into the FTTP business together back in June 2003. Under that agreement, the companies offered a joint solution made up of Quantum’s passive optical networking switching gear – including the QB5000 – and Motorola’s line of fiber-based customer premises equipment.
To date, the combo has netted deployment deals with a stable of service providers, including The City of Palo Alto Utilities (Calif.), North Attleborough Electrical Department (Mass.), and QCOL, which operates a fiber optic network spanning Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia.
