Motorola is buying Symbol Technologies for approximately $3.9 billion in stock.
Symbol designs and manufactures mobile computing products, data capture systems, radio frequency identification (RFID) devices, wireless infrastructure and mobility management systems used in retail, warehousing, manufacturing, government, transportation, health care and other sectors.
With the acquisition, Motorola entrenches itself even deeper into the enterprise market for mobile computing devices. Symbol’s operations will immediately become the biggest part of Motorola’s Networks & Enterprise business unit, anchoring what will end up being a business that can supply a wide variety of industries with end-to-end networking systems tailored for their specific needs.
