Motorola Mobility has added a content delivery network (CDN) option into its roster through a partnership with EdgeCast Networks that will also extend its reach globally.
Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola will distribute EdgeCast’s portfolio of content delivery network offerings to service providers worldwide. In doing so, Motorola will be able to combine its transcoders, encoders, software and video servers with EdgeCast’s IP CDN platform in order to compete with other CDN players such as Cisco and Alcatel-Lucent.
EdgeCast’s CDN offerings include advanced network provisioning, monitoring and management solutions. Motorola also brings its VOD, network DVR and in-home multi-screen video delivery capabilities into the partnership to enable end-to-end IP video delivery across various devices such as smartphones and tablets.
“Motorola is driving the evolution of TV and the smart, simple connect home. Working with EdgeCast provides us the ability to offer our customers simple and fast access to a proven CDN environment that enables the delivery of IP video-on-demand and nDVR cloud-based services directly to the multi-device, multi-screen-enabled consumer,” said Joe Cozzolino, senior vice president and general manager of network infrastructure solutions at Motorola Mobility. “EdgeCast’s CDN solution will immediately enable service providers the ability to efficiently deliver multi-screen IP content and, if desired, an option to generate additional revenue by offering their CDN services directly to content providers.”
