MRV Communications bulks up Pasadena’s communications network

September 19, 2013 By Mike Robuck

The city of Pasadena picked MRV Communications’ optical transport offering for its new communications network.

Pasadena is using MRV’s FiberDriver to provide high-capacity optical services for its municipal network. The city’s new network will be used to link its facilities using future-proof, high bandwidth services over a fully-owned fiber infrastructure.

“We needed to build out a network that offers enough bandwidth to support the variety of city services we provide,” said Phillip Leclair, chief information officer at the city of Pasadena. “MRV’s FiberDriver optical transport solution can provide the high-capacity bandwidth to connect essential public safety systems, as well as carry the local access television channels with HD broadcast quality, all while allowing us to reduce our total cost of ownership.”

When the city relocated its data center to a new facility, it decided to upgrade its existing fiber ring by adding a dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) system from MRV Communications to create a network capable of delivering more than 80 wavelengths, each offering up to 10 Gbps.

“By building a state-of-the-art optical infrastructure for its communications services, the city of Pasadena is taking an innovative approach to serving the needs of the community and, at the same time, supporting economic growth and development in the region,” said Tim Pillow, senior vice of sales and marketing from MRV Communications. “The flexibility of MRV’s optical transport solution enables the delivery of high-capacity services for any size and density of fiber network with industry-leading power and space efficiency. As a result, customers like the city of Pasadena are able to provide the most bandwidth-rich applications that its residents, businesses and visitors demand, including high-definition video services.”
