Netflix will be making its first foray out of the United States this fall when it starts offering its streaming video service to Canadian customers.
Netflix said its Canadian members will be able to watch TV shows and movies on their TVs, PCs and Mac computers, but it didn’t say if the service would be enabled right away on other devices such as iPads, Blu-ray players and gaming consoles.
Netflix will be competing against TV Everywhere services offered by Canadian cable operators, including Rogers Communications, Shaw Communications and Videotron.
While U.S. cable companies have focused on bringing TV shows to their TV Everywhere services, Shaw and Videotron have pledged to work on deals with studios for movie content similar to what Netflix offers in the U.S.
In addition to representing its inaugural international market, Canada will also mark the first streaming-only service promoted by Netflix.
At the time of launch, the Netflix Canadian service will be available in English only, but the company said it expects to add French language capability over time.
Canadians interested in Netflix can sign up to receive an e-mail from the company in regard to when the service launches in Canada this fall.
