New Snap Spectacles Turn Up in FCC Filing

April 13, 2018 By Tierney King

Snap Inc.’s corporate parent Snapchat may be preparing to release a new version of the Spectacle video sunglasses. The FCC published Snap’s filing for a “wearable video camera,” according to Geek Wire.

The documents made available for the public mention “Model 002,” that indicates a sequel to the first device. There will also be an electronic ID label, which is different from the original Spectacles that display the ID on the frame of the glasses, according to Variety.

One hardware change for the new Spectacles is the upgrade to 802.11ac Wifi standard that supports faster file transfers in the 5GHz band.

This filing came after Snap was reportedly working on a second and third generation version of the Spectacles. These new generation Spectacles could implement augmented reality and GPS components, selling for up to $300.

Initially, Snap took a hit when the first pair of Spectacles did not get received as well as Snap hoped. The company disclosed that hundreds of thousands of Spectacles were sitting in inventory, and they wrote off $40 million in unsold inventory.
