Cable industry considers IPTV specification
By Brian Santo
CANNES – Now that cable operators are planning to stud their systems with more set-tops that include cable modems, CableLabs and its members have decided it’s time to start mapping out how DOCSIS 3.0 and OpenCable will work together.
DOCSIS 3.0 defines ways for cable modems to operate at speeds well in excess of 100 Mbps, which means they will be more than capable of transmitting even uncompressed HD video. In other words, a set-top with a DOCSIS 3.0 modem embedded in it will have two channels for delivering video – the traditional video channel and the DOCSIS data channel.
CableLabs CTO Ralph Brown, speaking at the C-Cor Global IP Summit here, said the parties involved are still in the preliminary stages of drawing up how DOCSIS 3.0 would be added as an extension to OpenCable.
