Shaw adds more than 100,000 subs in its Q3

Shaw Communications Inc. added more than 50,000 digital phone lines, more than 20,000 digital cable subs and more than 27,000 Internet subs in the company’s Q3, ended May 31.

The company added a little more than 3,000 basic cable subs, bringing the total to 2.23 million. Shaw now has nearly 750,000 digital subs.

Shaw’s Internet customers are approaching 1.5 million; DTH subs are nearing 900,000 after more than 5,000 additions; and digital phone lines that have been or are being installed are just under 350,000. The digital phone footprint was expanded in British Columbia and is currently available to almost 80 percent of homes passed by the company.

Net income for the quarter was $91.7 million, compared with $126.4 million year-on-year. Cable service revenue increased 14.3 percent, to $526.9 million, and satellite division service revenue increased 5.9 percent, to $175.4 million, compared with the last year’s quarter.

SCTE taking technical paper proposals for ET conference

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) is seeking proposals for technical papers to be presented at the 2008 SCTE Conference on Emerging Technologies (ET), which will be held Jan. 14–16 in Los Angeles.

The conference’s theme will be: “Integrator or Pipeline? Transcending Transport in a Hyperconnected World.”

The ET 2008 Program Subcommittee – chaired by Tom Buttermore, VP and general manager of global cable solutions at Nortel Networks – will review all of the proposals, which are due by Aug. 10.

Interested participants should submit a one- to two-page proposal, in abstract form, to ET_info@scte.org, to the attention of SCTE’s Glenda Calcaterra. More information is available on the SCTE’s Web site.

CTS joins Corning’s FTTH support group

Communication Technology Services (CTS) is the newest member of Corning Cable Systems’ Total Access Program (TAP).

TAP members receive all-inclusive access to Corning’s FTTH solutions. After completing specialized training in the installation of optical access networks, TAP members are able to offer their customers up to a 10-year extended product warranty on complete Corning FTTH solutions.

CTS is a privately-held national communications infrastructure service company based in Marlborough, Mass. It provides a variety of communications infrastructure solutions featuring professional workforce resources for the design, installation and maintenance of voice, video and data networks, fiber-to-the-premises projects, structured wiring, wireless LAN deployment and VoIP solutions for enterprise and service provider customers.

Broadband Briefs for 7/13/07

* Verizon pushes DSL farther into rural Illinois

Even as it rolls out fiber-to-the-home, Verizon continues to extend its basic DSL service to areas it previously did not serve with broadband. The latest extension of DSL was to 10 towns in Illinois: Capron, Galva, Fisher, Greenfield, Norris City, Palestine, Paulton, Pearl City, Walnut and Wyoming. Together, those areas represent a total of 7,000 potential customers.

Verizon is offering promotional prices for its 3 Mbps downstream, 768 kbps upstream service of $19.99 per month for the first six months and $29.99 per month thereafter with a one-year commitment. Verizon also has a 768 kbps/128 kbps package for only $14.99 per month with an annual service agreement.
