Canadian telecommunications giant Bell Canada will use Nokia’s 7950 XRS IP core network router to support its Gigabit Fibe Internet infrastructure project and overall network capacity, the companies said Thursday.
According to Nokia, the XRS comes with a set of Layer 2 and Layer 3 service features as well as the ability to scale from 6.4 to 32 terabits per second.
The companies said the 7950 XRS will be managed by Nokia’s 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) to create a “single, end-to-end managed IP platform” that will help streamline operations, be more efficient and reduce the system’s energy footprint.
Bell Canada said the new router will help meet increasing demands for higher data speeds and reliability.
“Nokia’s 7950 XRS core router aligns with Bell’s strategy to lead investment and innovation in Canada’s broadband network infrastructure, providing us with the network capacity, scalability and efficiency to continue delivering world-leading network performance to our consumer and business customers, » Bell Canada’s vice president of wireline technology and engineering James Gilmore said.
The deal was reportedly won by Alcatel-Lucent, which was recently acquired by Nokia in a $17 billion purchase.
