Nuvvyo intros 4-tuner Tablo model

June 27, 2014 By Brian Santo

Almost on cue post-Aereo, Nuvyyo is making available the 4-tuner version of its Tablo, a retail box that consumers install and hook up with an antenna and a storage device to be able to receive and record over-the-air (OTA) HDTV.

The newest Tablo DVR provides four TV tuners for to simultaneously receive and/or record that many live TV streams. The original Tablo was a 2-tuner model. All Tablo DVRs include dual-band WiFi.

Tablo was designed to give cord-cutters the power to record and stream this programming to all types of devices including iOS and Android tablets, smartphones and computers, as well as TVs. Streaming to TVs requires the help of a streaming video device, for example Roku, Chromecast or Apple TV.

The approach avoids entirely the issues that sunk Aereo with the Supreme Court. But where Aereo appeared a bargain at $8/month, Tablo requires an up-front investment that some might find daunting. The MSRP for the 4-Tuner Tablo DVR is $299.99 ($329.99 Canadian) and is available via the Tablo website  or via retail partner NewEgg.com.

The Tablo stores guide data and recordings locally. The compay said that makes apps more responsive than on-screen TV grid guides or remote-controlled interfaces.

“Cord-cutters are looking for simple solutions to help them transition away from cable and satellite and Tablo was designed with this audience in mind,” said Nuvyyo’s CEO, Grant Hall. “With the addition of the Tablo 4-Tuner DVR model, we can provide the recording and viewing capabilities that larger households are looking for.”
