Given the limited amount of information about information in Cuba, it’s hard to confirm if this is right: Somewhere around 95 percent of Cubans cannot currently get online. Verifying that oft-referenced stat may not be easy, but Cubans’ lack of Internet access is obviously on President Obama’s mind as he makes his historic trip to the island nation this week.
And it sounds like it’s big on Google’s mind as well.
“One of the things that we’ll be announcing here is that Google has a deal to start setting up more WiFi access and broadband access on the island,” Obama told ABC News on Sunday.
Google didn’t officially respond immediately to the president’s announcement, but there’s been chatter for a while that Google was eyeing opportunities in Cuba, including reports last summer from Politico and the Miami Herald.
Obama said that the United States should encourage and facilitate change for Cuba, and access to the Internet is necessary for that country to enter the 21st Century economically.
