Openreach, BT’s local access business, reported this week that it plans to connect more consumers and small businesses in the United Kingdom to “ultrafast fiber” using its open access network.
The company says it will conduct two new trials of business fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology in Bradford, offering speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
Openreach also says it will build on trials of G.fast technology with new pilot sites in Cambridgeshire and Kent. Additionally, it says it is committing to build FTTP infrastructure into new U.K. housing developments that have more than 250 premises, free of charge.
“The U.K. is a leader when it comes to superfast broadband. Nine out of 10 premises have access to fiber today and this will grow to 95 per cent by the end of next year – but I want to get high speeds to everyone, so we’re also developing solutions for the final five per cent of the country,” Clive Selley, Openreach’s CEO, says.
Fiber broadband from Openreach with speeds of up to 80 Mbps is currently available to more than 24 million premises using fiber-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology, according to the company.
