Openreach, which is BT’s local network business, announced gigabit testing in the United Kingdom via its fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network back in March, and now this week it reports it is taking the gig option beyond the trial stage. It will soon be available to homes and businesses across the entire FTTP footprint, which includes a maximum download speed boost from 330 Mbps to 1 gigabit.
“We’re committed to taking the U.K. from being a superfast to an ultrafast nation, and whilst we’re extending the reach of our FTTP network, we’re also boosting the speed and variety of the services we can offer over it,” Openreach CEO Clive Selley says.
That comment does reference the fact that the current FTTP network is currently available to just 327,000 homes and businesses across the United Kingdom. However, Openreach is promising the network will double in size over the next year and reach up to two million premises by the end of 2020. The upgrades are part of a plan to make the advanced speeds available to up to 12 million U.K. premises in the same timeframe with a variety of fiber technologies.
Openreach will launch two additional wholesale products over FTTP in December, including a new 500 Mbps product – with an upload speed of up to 165 Mbps – and an up to 1 Gbps option with an upload speed of up to 220 Mbps. Prices range from a 40/2 Mbps option for £15.29 a month (wholesale), and a 1 Gbps/220 Mbps option that is slated to cost £80 a month (wholesale).
“We’ve been working closely with our wholesale CP customers to develop these new ultrafast products, and we expect the new higher speed services will be of particular interest to small and medium businesses,” Selley says.
