Portuguese provider deploys Cisco’s IPTV technology

December 8, 2008 By Mike Robuck

Cisco announced today that Portugal-based Sonaecom has picked its technology for an IPTV service.

Sonaecom is using Cisco’s Visual Quality Experience (VQE) for its Clix SmarTV service. Sonaecom currently offers IPTV services to subscribers across Portugal via an ADSL network and plans to reach one million homes via an optical fiber-to-the-home network by 2010.

Cisco said service providers are working to evolve their network into a medianet. A medianet represents an advanced, intelligent network optimized for video and rich media communications.

It enables service providers to consistently deliver the best-quality video possible. With medianet technologies, Sonaecom can optimize the scalability, performance and user experience of rich media, especially video, according to Cisco.

In addition to using Cisco’s Carrier Ethernet solutions, Sonaecom is using Cisco VQE error-repair and monitoring technologies to detect and repair packet loss in order to improve video quality.

Cisco also announced today a media processing platform that was designed to simplify live and on-demand media sharing across PCs, mobile devices and other digital screens by seamlessly formatting video and rich media for viewing on any device. The Cisco Media Processing platform provides media conversion, real-time post production, editing, formatting and network distribution capabilities in a single networked platform.

The first product being introduced within the Cisco Media Processing portfolio is the Cisco Media Experience Engine (MXE) 3000, which Cisco said delivers the ability to transform a single source of content so that it is playable on any device.

It also delivers real-time post-production and processing capabilities, such as watermarking, voice and video editing, text and image overlays, and noise reduction to create customized, broadcast-quality video experiences.

Cisco also announced today the availability of multipoint, intercompany connectivity via the AT&T Telepresence Solution. The combined platform allows companies to extend Cisco TelePresence multipoint meetings beyond the enterprise boundary to help enable meetings with customers, suppliers and partners using the AT&T Business Exchange.

A frequency you can count on There are few constants in life, but what few there are might include death, taxes, and a U.S. grid frequency that doesn’t vary by more than ±0.5 Hz. However, the certainty of the grid frequency is coming into question, thanks to the rising percentage of renewable energy sources that…
