As promised in October, gigabit speeds are now available to Chicago area residents from RCN, and the offering also is available in the service provider’s nearby serviceable areas of Skokie and Lincolnwood. Chicagoland is growing hotbed for 1 Gbps as back in August, Comcast revealed it would trial a Gig service in the Chicago area, and in June, AT&T said it was offering Wolf Point West residents in the area a gig in more than 500 units.
This latest RCN rollout comes right behind its deployment of a gigabit service in New York City. Both utilize DOCSIS 3.1 technology, so subscribers can get the new speeds through the same wiring they already have in their homes.
RCN reports that since it announced the pending availability of the gigabit service in the Chicago market, “a resounding number of customers have added themselves to the list for installation.” Residential service pricing starts at $69.99 per month for 12 months.
“The need for speed is real and only getting stronger with multiple devices, over-the-top (OTT) video content, smart homes, and more,” Tom McKay, SVP and GM of RCN Chicago, comments. “RCN 1 Gig customers will notice a big difference in the way they access the internet and share bandwidth in the home.”
