RCN looks like it’s going all-in on higher speeds in the Keystone State with news that it has made 1 Gbps available around the Philadelphia area, as well as a 330 Mbps internet offering to residents in Lehigh Valley. Philly is of course Comcast’s hometown, and where that operator put in what was said to be the world’s first DOCSIS 3.1 modem on a trial basis on a customer-facing network last year to reach for the gigabit brass ring.
RCN announced the immediate availability of gigabit speeds to residents in all of its Delaware County serviceable areas including Clifton Heights, Darby, Drexel Hill, Upper Darby, Yeadon, and more. RCN boasts in a statement it is the first to offer the Gig service in the Philadelphia suburbs.
RCN has been on a gigabit rollout tear recently in major metros including New York City, Washington D.C., and Chicago. It has been underlining that DOCSIS 3.1 technology makes it possible for RCN residential customers to receive the gigabit speeds through the same wiring they already have in their homes. The starting price is reported to be just under 70 bucks a month for 12 months.
In nearby Lehigh Valley, Pa., RCN also has launched of 330 Mbps internet speeds. The pricing for that is reported at under $60/month. Customers in Bethlehem, Easton, Allentown, and surrounding communities can get the 330 Mbps speed upgrade.
