Comcast will reportedly pay Sprint $250 million to settle allegations that the cable giant violated the wireless carrier’s patents to develop its own internet phone service.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the settlement amount was reported in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last week.
Sprint sued Comcast in 2011 and alleged that the latter’s Xfinity Voice and Digital Voice services, which are marketed in packages with its TV and internet service, infringed on dozens of patents.
The lawsuit was scheduled to go to trial last week. The telecom company reportedly sought nearly $1 billion in damages from Comcast, but the companies reached an agreement earlier this month.
The complaint was one of several filed by Sprint against other companies in past years. The Kansas-based company argues that one of its engineers developed the technology that serviced as the basis for internet phone service — including about 120 patents — in the 1990s.
