RF Micro Devices (RFMD) has released new product offerings – the S510075-33Z out-of-band tuner for use in cable set-top box and digital-cable-ready TV applications, and what the company said are the first gallium nitride (GaN)-based cable TV amplifier modules.
The S510075-33Z provides original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with a blend of performance and energy efficiency, while also meeting the increasing performance requirements of cable devices, the company said. It consists of an input automatic gain control (AGC) amplifier, a mixer and an AGC video amplifier, delivering a 60 percent size reduction and 25 percent reduction in power consumption compared with the previous generation S510065-55Z.
“Improvements in size reduction and efficiency, like those found in the S510075-33Z, are becoming critical requirements for set-top box manufacturers as they increase the functionality and resulting component content of new devices,” said Alastair Upton, GM of RFMD’s Broadband and Consumer Business unit. “In 2008, RFMD will expand our broad portfolio of CATV products to include new generations of active splitters, programmable return path amplifiers and line amplifiers.”
Features of the S510075-33Z include 3.3 V single supply operation, low power consumption (300 mW), low distortion (-50dBc @ 1 VPP), 70 dB total conversion gain, 55 dB total gain control range and low LO to RF leakage.
It is housed in a compact 3 x 3 mm, 16 lead, RoHS-compliant QFN package, and samples are available immediately. The company expects volume shipments of the S510075-33Z to commence this year.
The company’s D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 GaN-based cable TV amplifier modules have also been release. The modules are designed for use as power doubler amplifiers in current and next-generation cable TV infrastructure applications, including line amplification and hybrid fiber/coaxial (HFC) optical nodes, the company said.
The D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 feature 20 dB and 23 dB of gain, respectively. By combining multiple compound semiconductor technologies in an integrated, hybrid amplifier module, RFMD designers are able to produce unmatched performance across all critical multi-carrier distortion parameters, while also increasing output power capability and efficiency, the company said.
“RFMD’s innovative implementation of GaN in this new generation of CATV amplifier modules dramatically improves CIN performance at an opportune time in the CATV market,” Upton said. “As multiple system operators (MSOs) increase digitally modulated transmissions over their CATV infrastructure and continue to implement fiber deep programs, the low distortion and high output power of these breakthrough products enable OEMs to better service the demand for higher-performance CATV infrastructure equipment.”\
Technical features of the D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 include +24 Vdc supply voltage, industry-standard SOT115J module package, no external input/output matching with minimal external support components, maximum CTB of –74 dBc and CSO of –68 dBc, and CIN of 65 dB minimum for the D10040200PH1 and 63 dB minimum for the D10040230PH1.
Production quantities of D10040200PH1 and D10040230PH1 are available immediately. RFMD expects shipments to commence this year.
