Canadian operator Rogers has made its Rogers Ignite 1 Gbps services available across greater Moncton in New Brunswick. The company reports this is the first wave in delivering its fastest internet speeds to its Atlantic customers.
According to the operator’s numbers, Canadians are connecting more devices online and streaming more video than ever before. Tracking Rogers network traffic, by 2020 internet use will grow another 500 percent (vs. 450 percent over the last five years), connected devices in the home will double (from 11 to 20), and video streaming such as Netflix and YouTube will account for 80 percent of network traffic (vs. 55 percent today).
“Rogers Ignite Gigabit Internet is ideal for these connected households with multiple devices – at top speeds, customers can download an HD movie in less than 30 seconds, a full album in less than one second and a game in about five minutes,” Kelly Atkinson, EVP of residential services at Rogers, points out.
On the business side, Rogers reports that a 3 GB data file can be downloaded in less than 30 seconds and upload to cloud applications can happen up to 2.5 times faster than before.
“We’re pleased to see Rogers expand and invest their Gigabit Internet in the region,” Roger Melanson, New Brunswick’s president of the treasury board, says. “Increasing our digital infrastructure will help ensure businesses have the tools they need to reach their full potential as part of today’s digital economy.”
Rogers reports its will continue to expand its gig service across New Brunswick and into Newfoundland in the coming months.
