Rovi released a set of APIs that MVPDs can use to expand capabilities associated with Rovi’s guide services, and it has set up a Cloud Services unit – essentially a content delivery network (CDN).
Partners can use the APIs to create media guides, mobile applications, online stores, portals and more.
Rovi has for years been focused on leveraging its guide, but the company is modestly shifting its approach to accommodate the industry’s growing fascination with “cloud services.”
Rovi said its Cloud Services unit has set up redundant servers, including data centers in West and Central U.S., as well as in Europe. The CDN is based on a distributed caching architecture for fast and efficient data retrieval, the company said.
MVPDs can use the APIs that Rovi has released to create a new cloud-based service or set of services, with TVs that have broadband connections.
The APIs include:
- Rovi data service – Gives instant access to one of the company’s enormous catalogs of entertainment metadata
- Rovi media recognition service – Used to add advanced identification tools and fingerprinting technologies to apps so that consumers can find media and tag it with rich, descriptive metadata
- Rovi recommendations service – Lets operators deliver intelligent recommendations that help consumers discover new media and personalize their experiences based on popularity, similar titles or artists, as well as sponsored suggestions that reflect your editorial point of view
- Rovi search service – Delivers both standard and personalized entertainment search capabilities
- Rovi advertising service – Lets operators integrate living room display advertising into TVs, set-top boxes and game consoles. The service delivers interactive banners and video microsites.
