Samsung on Tuesday said it is planning to invest more than $1 billion in its Texas chip manufacturing facilities.
According to the company, the investments will be made in Samsung’s Austin, Texas manufacturing facility by the first half of 2017 in an effort to boost System LSI production to meet industry demands for advanced system-on-chip products. Samsung said the chips would mostly be for mobile and other electronic devices.
The announcement follows Samsung’s reveal last week that capital expenditures in 2016 would hit $24 billion. Samsung said nearly half of that figure would be used to boost its semiconductor business.
The company has been trying to raise the profile – and earnings – of its semiconductor business, including through deals to manufacture chips for companies like Qualcomm.
Samsung didn’t give specifics about the expected impacts of the investments to the 2.3 million square foot facilities’ output.
The company employs nearly 3,000 employees at its Austin complex, Samsung said.
