SCTE announces chapter award winners for last year

May 7, 2009 By Mike Robuck

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) announced today that the New England Chapter was named SCTE Chapter of the Year at the recent 2009 SCTE Chapter Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City.

The SCTE Chapter Awards for 2008 also included Great Lakes Chapter member Cliff Simpson being honored as SCTE Chapter Member of the Year.

Simpson is the Great Lakes Chapter’s president and has been an SCTE member since 1994. He is national account manager with BigBand Networks in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The SCTE, which has 68 chapters and meeting groups, also presented awards for second through seventh place in the SCTE Chapter of the Year category. Those honorees were the Cactus Chapter (serving Arizona) in second place, the Cascade Range Chapter (northwestern Oregon) in third, the Great Lakes Chapter (southeastern Michigan) fourth, the Lighthouse Chapter (Maine) fifth, the Red Rock Chapter (Nevada) sixth and the Gateway Chapter (eastern Missouri) seventh.

The SCTE also presented Chapter Achievement Certificates for the first time. Three chapters were honored with this award: the Golden Gate Chapter (northern California), the Hill Country Chapter (south central Texas) and the Rocky Mountain Chapter (Colorado).

The SCTE Compliance Award recipient was the Red Rock Chapter. The Most Improved Chapter (Compliance) was the Louisiana Chapter.

The SCTE Professional Development Award recipient was the New England Chapter. The Most Improved Chapter (Professional Development) was the Mid-Columbia Chapter (southern Washington).

The SCTE Recruitment Award recipient was the South Jersey Meeting Group. The Most Improved Chapter (Recruitment) was the Green Mountain Chapter (Vermont and New Hampshire).

The SCTE Striving for Excellence Award recipient was the Cactus Chapter. The Most Improved Chapter (Striving for Excellence) was the Bonneville Chapter (Utah).

The SCTE presented its Most Improved Chapter of the Year Award, as well, with the Louisiana Chapter winning in that category.

The Compliance, Striving for Excellence, Professional Development and Recruitment awards are each earned based on an objective points system for each award. Combining the points earned for those four award categories determines the Chapter of the Year Award recipients. The Chapter Member of the Year Award is determined by a traditional nomination process.

Yesterday, the SCTE and the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) announced that the SCTE was taking over responsibility for the ongoing maintenance and publication of the NCTA Recommended Practices for Measurements on Cable Television Systems.

NCTA Recommended Practices for Measurements on Cable Television Systems documents are commonly available test procedures for measuring pertinent system operating parameters. Recommend Practices was first issued in 1984 and has been updated twice. The current version was updated in 2002.

The SCTE said the transfer of the publication’s copyright enables the SCTE to more effectively implement its important role as the technical standards leader for the cable industry. The SCTE is also undertaking the task of updating the publication to cover current technology.

“In securing and revising the publication, SCTE is excited about this opportunity to build upon an enduring tradition begun by NCTA,” said SCTE President and CEO Mark Dzuban. “Countless cable professionals have benefited throughout the years from these astute recommended practices for measurements, and SCTE will see to it that this tradition continues as the proud new steward of a technical resource that promotes a smarter, more efficient workforce.”
