The rate of innovation by cable operators has picked up the pace, and to highlight some of those changes SCTE Cable-Tec Expo will feature back-to-back workshops focused on DevOps and Agile Deployment. The workshops, which will take place on Sept. 24 at the cable confab in Denver, will feature Michael “Doc” Norton, global director, engineering culture for Groupon, and executives from Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Liberty Global.
Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Liberty Global formed a joint venture for the cable industry’s Reference Design Kit (RDK), which is supported by both DevOps and Agile Development efforts. The RDK, which was originally designed by Comcast to cut down the cycle of set-top box development from years to months, is supported by more than 140 licensees including: CE manufacturers, system-on-a-chip (SoC) vendors, software developers, system integrators, and TV service providers.
The two Wednesday workshops are:
9:30 a.m.—“An Introduction to the Critically Important Matter of DevOps”; Norton, global director, engineering culture, Groupon; Joe Campbell, senior software architect, Comcast Cable; moderator Sean Wechter, vice president, operations, Comcast Cable.
10:45 a.m.—“Putting DevOps Into Practice: The RDK Model”; Labeeb Ismail, vice president, CPE software, Comcast Cable; Bill Warga, vice president, technology, Liberty Global; Matt Zelesko, senior vice president, converged technology group, Time Warner Cable; moderator Leslie Ellis, owner, Ellis Edits, Inc.
“Our industry is rapidly adopting DevOps methods for software development and to bring products to market,” said Tony Werner, executive vice president and CTO of Comcast Cable. “The insights of Doc Norton and our other panelists, as well as the real-world implementation of RDK, will help our audience understand the vision and the reality of DevOps’ contributions to cable’s competitive position.”
An agile practitioner and coach since 1999, Norton is focused on helping teams, departments and companies work better together in the pursuit of better software.
Expo will be held Sept. 22-25 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.
