A day after being named director of SCTE Region 12, Joseph Guariglia, vice president of technical operations at Comcast’s Greater Boston Region, was named the SCTE’s Member of the Year.
The SCTE said Guariglia distinguished himself during the past year with his tireless efforts as chairman of the SCTE New England Chapter’s Vendor Day Committee, helping to attract 90 vendors and more than 300 attendees.
Two SCTE members were inducted into the society’s Hall of Fame (HoF).
John Chapman, fellow and CTO with Cisco Systems, helped build Cisco’s first DOCSIS CMTS, invented the DOCSIS set-top gateway (or DSG; it’s a means of moving out-of-band signaling to a DOCSIS channel), and was one of the key drivers of the channel-bonding technology enshrined in the DOCSIS 3.0 standard.
“Isn’t this the greatest place to work? The cable industry?” he said.
Chapman was accompanied on stage by his two daughters, who gave him big hugs at the end of his acceptance speech.
The other new HoF member is Dennis Sartori, national cable TV accounts manager with the MaxCell division of TVC. Sartori, who started the SCTE Great Lakes Chapter in Michigan, was recognized for a long career advocating for better technical training.
He said his goal had always been to improve training. When he first decided to get a job in cable in 1971, he said, he approached a technician outside his local cable operation. The tech instructed him to pick up and move a nearby utility ladder, which he did, apparently successfully, which got him hired.
“Even at the time,” he said, “I sensed that this was not the best way to determine how to hire somebody.”
During Expo’s Opening General Session this morning, SCTE board of directors Chairman Mike LaJoie, executive vice president and CTO of Time Warner Cable, presented the SCTE Chairman’s Award for 2012 to Bob Foote, vice president of sales for major markets at TriNet Communications. Foote has been a longtime board member of the SCTE. He was Member of the Year in 2005.
Dean Stoneback received the SCTE Excellence in Standards Award. At Motorola Mobility, Stoneback is senior manager of systems engineering in the network infrastructure solutions group. As chairman of Working Group 5 of SCTE’s Interface Practices Subcommittee (IPS), he helped develop the RFoG standard and the SFP-RF and XFP-RF optical module interface standards.
Members elevated to senior membership status included two people from Times Fiber Amphenol: Christopher Cooper, strategic account manager, and Gregory Worthman, regional account manager.
Jennifer Yohe Wagner, vice president of strategic business procurement for Comcast Cable, received the Women in Technology Award for 2012. She has been instrumental in transforming the Comcast procurement and purchasing organization from a tactical function into a strategic organization.
