If there’s any doubt that the cable industry is serious about energy management, it should be dispelled when the SCTE opens the doors on its SEMI (Smart Energy Management Initiative) Forum in March in Philadelphia.
More than a dozen panels across three different tracks – strategy, outside plant/fleet and facilities – will be conducted during the all-day conference. Experts representing cable system operators, vendors and industry organizations will deliver case studies and research presentations that will discuss power, density, performance and sustainability issues.
This will be the first SEMI event to be open to general attendance, the SCTE noted.
“As cable system operators configure their networks for the delivery of new services, smart energy management strategies are increasing in importance,” said Derek DiGiacomo, senior director of information systems and energy management for SCTE. “Our March 15 SEMI Forum agenda has been designed to address the topics that can help the industry not only to reduce operational costs, but also to ensure the continued availability of power for business services, home security and other new service offerings.”
Presenters scheduled for the event include representatives of Alpha Technologies, Arris, Bloom Energy, CableLabs, Cisco, Comcast, Coppervale, Cox Enterprises, Motorola Mobility, Power Networks, Quest Controls, Redwood Lighting Solutions, Shaw Communications and Time Warner Cable, as well as SCTE.
Among the scheduled presentations are case studies entitled “Cox energy dashboard supported by Urjanet,” “Disaster preparedness for high availability networks in the plant,” “Energy efficiency: Electrical/mechanical support systems” and “New large-scale database construction: LEED silver certification.”
Other presentation titles include:
- “Benchmarking network density and power for critical facilities: An SCTE future SMS standard”
- “Batteries: Do we have a choice?”
- “Cogeneration as a lower total cost of ownership model”
- “Energy and carbon management for the cable telecommunications industry”
- “Intelligent, high-efficiency outside plant network powering”
- “Orchestrating utility network supply and demand in real time via the Internet, home networks and smart appliances”
- “Powering consequences of new services and architectures”
- Truck roll reduction: Prevention is the greenest strategy.”
Additional presentations are expected to be announced in the near future.
