Sequans chip powers Zyxel WiMAX dongle

July 23, 2009 By Brian Santo

Zyxel has introduced a mobile WiMAX USB device, the first WiMAX product based on a new chip from Sequans Communications.

Sequans has a proprietary MIMO technology, and it has pulled off a nice bit of integration. The combination gives users of the Zyxel dongle the option of doubling cell coverage, lowering power consumption or trading off between both factors.

Sequans claims its SQN1210 is the first mobile WiMAX chip to integrate baseband and triple band RF in a single die. Sequans has also built in its patent-pending mimoMAX technology, which combines a maximum likelihood decoder on the downlink with dual transmit channels on the uplink. Sequans says that enables uplink MIMO, greatly increasing the link budget, which can be used to nearly double cell coverage and/or lower the power consumption and cost of mobile devices.

Zyxel President Yuh-Long Chen said, “Sequans’ mimoMAX technology, specifically the dual transmit/uplink MIMO feature, has allowed us to deliver a 23 dBm USB dongle that performs equally as well as a 27 dBm, high-end, desktop CPE.”

Zyxel’s MAX-507 2.5 GHz MIMO USB dongle supports 2Tx and 2Rx, MIMO Matrix A and B. Auto-installation lets users enjoy instant Internet surfing the minute they plug it in. For operators, it supports over-the-air software upgrades via OMA-DM and five classes of QOS support.
