As a precursor to new Internet packaging slated for later this summer, Shaw Communications announced today that it has increased the downstream speed of one of its data tiers at no additional cost to subscribers.
The Shaw Extreme tier, which is the anchor service for the Shaw Plan Personalizer, saw its downstream speed increase from 15 Mbps to 25 Mbps, and upload rates from 1 Mbps to 2.5 Mbps.
Customers who currently subscribe to Shaw Extreme will be automatically upgraded to the new speeds over the next month, the company said.
“It’s an exciting time at Shaw as we begin to create a world-class Internet product, giving our customers the ultimate experience in connectivity and entertainment,” said Shaw President Peter Bissonnette. “The Shaw Extreme speed upgrade is just the first spark of a whole new world of entertainment and offerings to come. We’re building the network of the future, and our customers are at the very heart of it.”
The Shaw Plan Personalizer, which was introduced last month, gives Shaw subscribers the ability to build their own triple-play bundles.
Since the Extreme tier is the anchor service for the Plan Personalizer, perhaps this is a clue that Shaw plans to encourage subscribers to access premium content on-demand – a TV Everywhere-like service. Shaw’s Plan Personalizer is the company’s experiment with premium channel a la carte.
