Voice-controlled television has made its way to Shaw Communications customers in Canada. Dubbed BlueSky TV, it is powered by Comcast’s X1 technology and is reportedly the first time it has been used outside the United States.
“With features like the voice remote and advanced search, X1 has given Comcast customers a completely different video and entertainment experience than what they’re used to in the home,” Tony Werner, president, technology and product at Comcast says. “We’ve seen a tremendous response from millions of customers in the U.S. and we’re excited Shaw’s customers will soon experience the same game-changing TV platform.”
Beyond voice control, BlueSky TV also brings together a subscriber’s content in one place, regardless of whether a program is live, recorded, on-demand, or offered through an over-the-top service. The service also offers real-time sports scores, standings, and player stats, as well as a specialized KidsZone with age-appropriate content and parental control options.
Shaw reports the service is currently available in Calgary, and will launch in additional markets within the operator’s footprint in the coming months.
Last month, another Canadian operator, Rogers Communications, reported it was dropping its development of an internet-based TV system and instead going with Comcast X1. In a statement, Rogers said it expected launch the new service in early 2018. More on that is here.
