Shaw Communications will be using Nokia Siemens Networks’ gear for its wireless network.
After a competitive review process, Nokia Siemens got the nod of approval from Shaw for the deployment of its radio access network and core equipment in Shaw’s wireless network.
Shaw cited Nokia Siemens’ “considerable experience in deploying state-of-the-art wireless networks in Canada” as one of the reasons for its selection, as well as its work in developing 3G and LTE technologies.
The equipment from Nokia Siemens will be both 3G- and LTE-capable, which gives Shaw the flexibility to deliver broadband wireless services to customers using the Advanced Wireless Services band, as well as other frequency bands.
Several years ago, Shaw forked out $190 million on wireless licenses when Ottawa opened up competition in the wireless arena. Shaw has held its wireless plans close to the vest to date, but media reports in Canada speculate that the service will be launched sometime next year.
Shaw said its wireless network would be fully integrated into its fiber-optic network to enable the full potential of high-speed mobile applications to its customers.
