Shenick puts DOCSIS 3.0, EuroDOCSIS to the test

March 31, 2009 By Mike Robuck

Shenick Network Systems, a provider of per-flow IP communication test and monitoring systems, today announced that it’s the first company to concurrently test and measure IPv4 and IPv6 traffic on a per-flow basis for the DOCSIS 3.0 and EuroDOCSIS specifications.

DOCSIS 3.0 is an interface specification that offers significantly higher data rates and high-speed IP broadband services delivered over cable TV networks. While much of the current focus on DOCSIS 3.0 has been around the increased data speeds, large cable operators, such as Comcast, are also working on deploying DOCSIS 3.0’s IPv6 capabilities because of the large number of IP devices in their networks and the lack of IPv4 addresses.

Shenick said it is the first and only company to concurrently generate IPv6 and IPv4 flows to represent a single customer dialing into a cable network, and to test those flows on a granular per-flow basis with its diversifEye platform.

Shenick said diversifEye greatly expands the number of Internet addresses that cable operators may use, which allows them to provide consumers with more IP-based services. It also enables cable MSOs to effectively manage devices that are capturing consumer interest, such as portable media players, PDAs and triple-play services.

Shenick said cable operators and network equipment manufacturers are currently using its diversifEye to ensure that networks upgraded to deliver DOCSIS 3.0 can support the introduction of high-speed broadband services, such as video-on-demand and IPTV.

In addition, Shenick enables MSOs to measure, in real time, the effectiveness of upstream channel bonding at the application layer on a per-end-user, per-flow basis.

Shenick will demonstrate these new capabilities at this week’s Cable Show in Washington, D.C.
