Siemon Interconnect Solutions announces the participation as a Community Member in the Open Compute Project (OCP). The Open Compute Project (OCP) is a collaborative community focused on redesigning hardware technology to efficiently support the growing demands on compute infrastructure.
The Open Compute Project is committed to minimizing the environmental impact of infrastructure technology and energy consumption through continued evolution in energy and material efficiency. The OCP evaluates the influence of all components within the data center ecosystem, leading to optimized energy, space and material use as well as reduced environmental impact.
Specifically, the Open Compute server’s vanity-free design eliminates nearly 6 pounds of material per server, reducing the amount of materials that need to be produced, transported, assembled, and eventually, disassembled. “Designing out,” or excluding, all non-essential features and non-relevant elements from the Open Compute servers allows for a custom chassis that minimizes the overall part count, accelerates assembly, and removes extraneous elements such as a front panel, paint and logos. In addition to reducing non-essential materials and processes, OCP network equipment is designed to operate in a higher-temperature environment, reducing the overall cooling load required in a data center.
At The Siemon Company, we’ve worked hard to be the most green and sustainable privately owned network infrastructure company in the world, so that our customers can deploy environmentally responsible cabling systems without sacrificing performance. Siemon is a committed, driving force of environmental policies and conservation activities, utilizing a global environmental management system certified ISO 14001. Through our design and vertical manufacturing capabilities we have the ability and flexibility to quickly respond to the needs of the OCP community to simplify designs and manufacture products that meet the environmental goals of the data center.
