Sights at the IDT tech seminar

December 20, 2018 By Lee Teschler Leave a Comment

Baby, it’s cold outside

IDT temp sensorFor those who want to quantify the temperature involved in the controversial Academy Award-winning song written in 1944, IDT’s wireless flow rate, humidity, and temperature sensing evaluation kit might come in handy. The SDAWIR evaluation kit employs the 6LoWPAN ZWIR4512 low-power wireless module to communicate humidity, temperature, and flow sensor measurement data to the kit’s 6LoWPAN-WiFi hub. The WiFi hub provides a way to display and graph the measured data in real time on a web browser (as in the bottom image) or other device.
The sensors, FS2012 flow sensor and HS3001 humidity and temperature sensor, all sit in a 5-cm clear plastic cube that also contains a ZWIR4512 wireless module to communicate with the hub.
The kit’s hub isn’t much to look at. It is basically a Raspberry PI Zero W using the Raspbian LXDE operating system. It also permits sending the measurements to Amazon Web Services. If you go this route, the end-user needs an Amazon Web Service account.
The IDT application engineer who explained all this to us said the typical applications are in medical equipment and HVAC systems. The on-board sensors aren’t toys. The RH accuracy is ±1.5% RH typical, the temperature sensor accuracy is ±0.2°C (typ.) at -10 to 80°C, and the flow sensor is a MEMS device with an accuracy error typically down to 2% of reading.
