Subscription video on demand (SVOD) services have exploded and broadband networks have grown more robust, so it’s basically inevitable that streaming would begin eating up the lion’s share of bandwidth. But even considering, it’s amazing how fast streaming has taken over.
As Recode points out, Sandvine has compiled some new global broadband numbers that show that streaming of real-time entertainment now accounts for more than 70 percent of U.S. downstream traffic. Incredibly, that figure was less than 35 percent just five years ago.
Also surprising is the side effect wider availability of streaming is having on other, more illicit forms of video access. According to Sandvine, BitTorrent keeps losing fixed broadband traffic share, falling to 5 percent this year, down from 7 percent one year ago.
Not surprisingly, the rise in streaming video coincides with increased access to broadband in the United States. Last week, Leichtman Research said now 81 percent of all U.S. households have access to broadband, a 26 percent increase over the past 10 years.
