SureWest Communications has a bandwidth management and HD strategy, and the operator has started deploying equipment and software to meet its long-term goal of supporting next-generation service delivery.
As part of this initiative, SureWest has tapped BigBand Networks and its switched digital video technology for the upcoming rollout of SDV in the operator’s Kansas City market, which will enhance its triple play of services.
“We researched and tested various options for optimization of our bandwidth and have chosen BigBand’s SDV solution due to its ability to efficiently meet our customers’ expanding demands for access to additional programming, and for an even larger HD channel lineup,” said Ken Johnson, SureWest’s vice president and general manager of operations in Kansas.
Johnson added, “SDV will allow us to quickly regain RF spectrum that can then be reallocated to support high-bandwidth applications such as HD and 3-D programming, as well as DOCSIS 3.0.”
SureWest’s deployment of SDV will be implemented across its Cisco set-top box environment in the Kansas City region. SureWest also said that it plans to use future capabilities of the SDV architecture for delivery of cost-effective, next-generation IP video services that will become increasingly personalized over time.
BigBand’s SDV solution has been deployed, or is being deployed, by six of the top-10 cable operators in North America, passing more than 35 million households. The vendor has deployed SDV equipment with Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner Cable and Cox, as well as others.
