Last night Tesla Motors officially unveiled the Model X, the electric car company’s first SUV.
The concept for the car was initially unveiled in 2012, with a launch date originally set for 2013; however, the vehicle’s release was pushed as Model S sales increased.
The event featured Musk’s infamous grandeur, which, not surprisingly also translates to the new vehicle’s design – the crowd cheered as Musk demonstrated the futuristic falcon wings.
The doors feature built in sensors for opening in garages of any height and require a foot of clearance.
The car even features a “bioweapon defense mode.”
“If there’s ever an apocalyptical scenario,” Musk said, “press the button.” And a medical grade HEPA filter will remove all viruses from the cabin air (also pollen, bacteria, and pollution).
Other, perhaps more practical safety features, include camera, radar, and sonar systems that provide real-time feedback to the driver.
To resist rollovers, the 90 kWh battery is mounted on the floor to lower the vehicle’s center of gravity.
The battery provides 250 miles of range, which is achieved with help from a 0.24 drag coefficient and an active spoiler that deploys for improved aerodynamics.
Estimated deliveries are expected in the second half of 2016.
As for price, biodefense features as standard don’t come cheap – the first Model X owners paid at least $132,000 for a fully loaded “signature” model.
