Digital TV Research is forecasting that close to a fifth of Latin America’s TV households will pay for an SVOD package by 2021. That’s up from the 10.9 percent projected by the end of 2016. The “Latin America SVOD Forecasts” report from the firm covers 18 countries, and estimates 31.81 million SVOD subs by 2021, up from 12.19 million in 2015.
“Despite losing market share, Netflix will still account for more than half of Latin America’s SVOD subscribers by 2021. Demonstrating rapid growth, Claro Video will bring almost another fifth – so Netflix and Claro Video together will account for 70 percent of the 2021 total,” Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, projects.
Netflix released some big numbers for its Q3 2016 earlier this month, which included healthy revenue growth coming from outside the U.S. Global streaming revenue was reported at $2.2 billion, of which 40 percent was generated abroad, according to Netflix.
For the overall SVOD market in Latin America, Murray predicts Brazil will account for 36 percent of the region’s SVOD subs by 2021, with Mexico marking 26 percent. “So, these two heavyweights will contribute nearly two-thirds of the SVOD subs by 2021,” he notes.
