Taking care of businesses: Cox Business adds online backup, security in N.Va.

July 1, 2008 By Mike Robuck

Cox Business has added online backup and security services to its small- to medium-size business (SMB) customers in Northern Virginia.

The Premium Online Back-up and Premium Security Suite will be available to Cox Business customers who are using the company’s business Internet service at no additional coast.

These new services will help ensure that Cox customers’ local network data is protected by providing anti-virus, anti-spyware and a firewall for intrusion detection, as well as safely storing this data at a secure off-site location.

“The data on a business customer’s PC is often the life blood of their business, and for many small businesses and home offices, that data is not as well protected as it should be,” said J.D. Myers, VP of Cox Business. “Premium Online Back-up provides businesses with an online backup solution that enables them to store their data easily and securely at an off-site data storage facility. In today’s world, small businesses don’t typically have an IT department or an IT manager. Cox now has a group of services that will help them manage their network and better control the information within their business.”

Premium Online Back-up enables customers to establish a data backup profile that includes the specific files to be backed up and the frequency of backup. Once the profile has been established and implemented, backup is automatic and the customer can forget about it and focus on their business.

Premium Online Back-up also provides customers with online file sharing and “Whalemail.” The Whalemail capability enables customers to provide others with secure access to centrally stored files via an e-mail link, and it provides administrative tools that enable the customer administrator to manage the storage space and run usage reports.

Premium Security Suite is a business class service with seven scanning engines that scan for local network data, providing first-class protection with an industry-leading detection rate, the company said. The service also has an online administrative tool that enables the customer administrator to manage and track the effectiveness of the Premium Security Suite for their company.

Cox Business, a division of Cox Communications, provides voice, data and video services to more than 240,000 business customers in Cox markets across the nation.

A frequency you can count on There are few constants in life, but what few there are might include death, taxes, and a U.S. grid frequency that doesn’t vary by more than ±0.5 Hz. However, the certainty of the grid frequency is coming into question, thanks to the rising percentage of renewable energy sources that…
