A separate Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Advanced Media Technology for Best Use of “On-Demand” (Consumer Scheduled or Programmed) Technology Over Broadband Networks for Active “lean-forward” Viewing was given to Ensequence and MLB.TV for MLB Mosaic.
TWC snagged a second Emmy, with vendor BigBand Networks, for revolutionizing TV with switched digital video (SDV).
An Emmy Award for coaxial cable technology went to a decidedly unconventional cable operator: AT&T.
Vyvx Services won an Emmy Award for “pioneering development of a fully monitored fiber-optic-based digital network for occasional use and full time video services with fully provisioned local video access at shared-use sports venues.”
Electronics Research, Dielectric Communications, Harris Broadcast and Micro Communications won Emmys for ATSC broadcast transmission system RF filters.
CNN won an award for its development and implementation of an integrated and portable IP-based live, edit and store-and-forward digital newsgathering system.
There were several Emmys handed out for monitoring and compliance standards. They went to Rohde & Schwarz, Tektronix, Thomson and Pixelmetrix.
Interactive advertising was recognized in several categories. An award for outstanding achievement with advertising on PCs was given to The L Word in Second Life, from Showtime Networks/Electric Sheep Company. A similar award for ads delivered through set-tops went to Axe Boost Your E.S.P. Interactive Channel Experience, from Brightline iTV/Unilever.
March Madness On-Demand from CBSSports.com/CBS Sports won an Emmy for interactive programming across two screens (TV/PC and TV/mobile device). MTV won an award for Non-Traditional Programs or Platforms with its Virtual Laguna Beach.
