Although there is a lot of excitement in the tech industry today, drones and VR struggle to catch on with the public. A recent report from Accenture showed a downturn in purchases of new tech compared to last year.
Cell phone technology has already reached its peak, and the market seems to show that the average consumer already has a device that works for them. Fewer people are inclined to purchase new technology this year than compared to last year, and 47 percent of the people who say they don’t plan to buy a new smartphone this year are content with their existing device. Fewer than 15 percent of people polled plan to buy a smartwatch, fitness tracker, or other connected device.
The number of people planning to buy a smartphone this year dropped by 6 points from 2015’s numbers, and 9 points from 2014.
The device which seems to be holding steadiest is still the smartphone, with 48 percent of people polled saying that they plan to buy one in 2016. Laptops and televisions follow at 30 percent, but all of them lost between six and eight points of interest compared to last year.
The least desirable devices in the survey were drones, although interest in them – as well as in fitness monitors and connected surveillance cameras – went up one point over last year.
