Broadband video and data communications company Teleste and electronics giant Samsung are teaming up on a new solution to bring IP TV service to hotel guest rooms over existing coaxial cabling, the companies announced Friday.
According to the companies, the solution provides high-speed Internet to each guest room and allows guests to use applications and various interactive services on their in-room smart TVs. The solution also allows guests to connect their own personal smartphones and tablets to the Internet through the smart television’s wireless access point.
The product functions on the coaxial wiring that already exists in many hotels across the globe, using Teleste’s DAH100 to extend the IP network to more than 250 guest rooms simultaneously.
Internet access points in each room are provided through an embedded cable modem in Samsung’s DOCSIS HE694 HTV television set.
The companies said the solution will allow hotel operators to save up to 80 percent on their connectivity expenses.
“Traditionally, hospitality industry service providers have built separate networks for delivering cable TV and IP-based services, such as guest Internet access, OTT (Over the Top) and video-on-demand,” Teleste’s Director of Hospitality and AV Solutions Jonathan Rigby said. “This has, in many cases, made it considerably slower and more costly for them to accommodate full IP service delivery. In cooperation with Samsung Electronics, we are delighted to offer the Hospitality industry a solution that makes it quick and cost-efficient to invest in premium-quality IP service delivery by utilizing existing coaxial infrastructures.”
