Service providers can instantly provision bandwidth where it is required with a new capability Tellabs has added to its 7100 optical transport system.
Tellabs said the new feature, a multi-degree reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM), allows service providers to expand network capacity one optical link (up to 440 gigabits) at a time. In addition, the Tellabs 7100 system integrates dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM), SONET and Ethernet switching into a single platform.
Separately, Tellabs said service providers can now deliver broadband over fiber to small businesses by using Tellabs new optical network terminals (ONTs).
The two new ONT’s in Tellabs 1600 Series line allow providers to migrate small and medium-sized businesses from copper to fiber at what Tellabs characterizes as a “reasonable” cost.
The new Tellabs business services ONTs support voice, video, high-speed Internet and T-1 services. Tellabs’ intelligent ONT designs simplify operator migration to an all-IP network. The Tellabs 1600-631 ONT is optimal for small businesses, with support for 8 telephony lines, an Ethernet connection, 2 T-1 connections and a cable TV interface. The Tellabs 1600-641 ONT benefits multiple-tenant locations, such as office parks, with support for 16 telephony lines, 8 Ethernet connections, 4 T-1 connections and a cable TV interface. The new Tellabs business services ONTs will be generally available in the second quarter of 2006.
