Anyone who is a true gamer at heart should brace themselves because The Alternative Limb Project has created a tech-infused, game-inspired prosthetic called The Phantom Limb. Game titan Konami approached The Alternative Limb Project to create a prosthetic arm for amputee gamer James Young. This artificial limb was specifically inspired by the highly popular video game, Metal Gear Solid.
The hand itself was 3D printed by the company, Open Bionics. It receives signals from electrodes in the leather harness that securely straps the prosthetic to the body. This communication between the leather strap and mechanical hand enables gestures and varying grip positions to be formed by buttons located on the forearm. The full list of hand positions are as follows: a thumps up, open palm, pointing, tripod, pinching, and a closed fist.
Bluetooth technology is all in the wrist, which also contains a convenient USB port. Young’s phone can connect to a small screen interface that displays a multitude of notifications such as incoming calls, emails, and text messages.
Manufacturing company GTR constructed the arm piece from carbon fiber material. This ensured the limb was durable but also light in weight. Young can stock up on small electronics by putting them in the removable panel located at the shoulder. While in this compartment, the arm can charge and power these gadgets.
If you thought this arm couldn’t be infused with any more technology, then prepare to be amazed. In the shoulder space lives an actual bespoke quadcopter. Using a one-handed controller and first person view (FPV) goggles, Young has full control of its flight path.
The high-voltage, lithium battery is found in the bicep and powers the design. Esthetic lights run through the entire structure, solidifying the Metal Gear Solid look. A built-in sensor that responds to Young’s heart rate can also be hooked up to the intricate embedded light system.
