The Tinker’s Toolbox – Steve Grady of Cymbet on Energy Harvesting

July 5, 2011 By ECN Staff

alixHosted by Alix Paultre, the Tinker’s Toolbox is the Advantage Design Group’s web-based interview show where we talk about the latest technology, components, and design issues for the  electronic  design engineering community.

Steve GradyIn this episode, we talk to Steve Grady of Cymbet on energy harvesting, low-power circuitry, and the challenges to the engineer in evaluating and implementing the technology. Cymbet’s EnerChip eco-friendly solid-state batteries enable many applications including RTC, MCU, or SRAM power back-up, embedded energy, zero power systems, and wireless sensors.

Here is a recent press release on the company’s technology:

evalAvnet Abacus signs ‘green technology’ battery deal with Cymbet Corporation
Avnet Abacus, one of Europe’s leading interconnect, passive, electromechanical and power distributors, has signed a Pan-European distribution agreement with Cymbet Corporation, the leader in solid-state energy storage solutions for microelectronic systems, to distribute Cymbet’s complete range of rechargeable solid state batteries, power management devices, and evaluation kits. This will include Cymbet’s EnerChip solid state batteries (SSB) and development tools, the new EnerChip EP energy processor, the universal energy harvesting EVAL-09 kit, and the EnerChip CC RF Induction Charger EVAL-11 kit.

Graham McBeth, president of Avnet Abacus commented, “This agreement with Cymbet is further evidence of Avnet Abacus bringing innovative, technology leading products to the European market. Cymbet’s products are an ideal addition to our linecard, especially as we believe that their solid state batteries will become very important in future ‘green’ electronic designs.”

“We are pleased to be partnering with Avnet Abacus for the distribution of our EnerChip product family,” says Bill Priesmeyer, chief executive officer of Cymbet. “Our customers will benefit from Avnet Abacus’ market leading presence, technical support capabilities, and logistical excellence.”

Cymbet’s EnerChips are used in power back-up, embedded energy and energy harvesting applications. EnerChip SSBs are used in many industries including industrial control, medical, consumer electronics, appliances, handheld devices, transportation, renewable energy and wireless sensors. Because EnerChip SSBs are packaged in standard dual-flat no-leads (DFN) or quad-flat no-leads (QFN) packages, the batteries are surface mounted and are reflow solder tolerant to 260°C. The EnerChip CC is a rechargeable solid state battery co-packaged with integrated power management functions that provides a cost effective single chip drop-in solution for power back-up and energy harvesting applications.
